WASHINGTON, D.C., December 13, 2012 – In a letter to the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee, the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) urged Congress to embrace tax credit extensions for alternative fuels, underscoring its importance to America’s energy security and employment objectives.

Richard Roldan, NPGA’s President and CEO, stated in the letter, “All of these provisions positively impact the economy, creating jobs, benefiting consumers, encouraging market-based environmental stewardship, and promoting American-made fuel.”  Highlighting propane’s abundance and ability to help America achieve its goal of being energy independent, Roldan continued, “virtually all consumer propane used in the United States is produced in North America from North American resources.”  The propane industry has more than 3,000 companies and nearly 40,000 employees.

Derived from natural gas, propane is clean, efficient, and used in a variety of applications from transportation, residential and commercial heating and cooking, agricultural, as well as chemical and industrial.  Extending the alternative fuel excise tax credit and the alternative fuel vehicle refueling property credit will give all alternative fuels, not just propane, more economic certainty and spur greater investments.

Recently, NPGA joined five other alternative fuel groups in calling on Congress to “establish a meaningful ‘all of the above’ energy policy by accelerating adoption of oil-alternatives in transportation.”  The coalition’s letter noted, “innovation in the transportation sector can be accelerated with targeted, time-limited and performance-based incentives.”

“We’re at a crossroads in American energy policy,” said Roldan.  “Propane is an important part of our comprehensive energy strategy, and it’s time for Congress to adopt a comprehensive tax extenders package that will allow businesses to plan ahead and empower consumers to embrace alternative fuels.”

The National Propane Gas Association is the national trade association of the propane industry. NPGA represents approximately 3,000 companies, including producers, wholesalers, transporters, and retailers of propane gas as well as the manufacturers and distributors of associated propane equipment and appliances. 50 million Americans choose propane as their energy source. Propane is a clean-burning, efficient and climate-friendly alternative fuel that is available now. For more information about NPGA and the propane gas industry, visit NPGA on the Internet at<>.
